NGK (2021) Hindi Dubbed Movie Review: A Must Watch For Fans Of Action Films

For the past few years, Suriya has found himself at a crossroads. After demonstrating his box office pull in the late 2000s with films like Ayan and Singam, he has been trying hard to fit into scripts that serve both the actor and the star in him.

While the films he did with new-age directors like Venkat Prabhu (Massu Engira Masilamani), Vikram K Kumar (24, inarguably, his best film this decade) and Vignesh ShivN (Thaanaa Serndha Koottam) did not work at the box office, even the ones with proven commercial filmmakers like Hari (Si3) and Lingusamy (Anjaan) haven’t had any impact.

Which is why news of him collaborating with a unique filmmaker like Selvaraghavan felt both exciting and unnerving.

    Introduction

An educated and highly qualified man of course, enters politics as an 'outsider'. This way, the scenario of political films changing in our films seems to grow stronger.

But, what if an 'outsider' becomes a corrupt politician and this corrupt politician has to face an angry public, by assuming power, but his honest 'do-gooder' side is never shown off?

Will a corrupt politician be able to grab the public's anger? Let's find out in NGK (2019), written and directed by Bala. Let's Know About The Cast Naga Chaitanya-Mohanlal-Rana Daggubati trio have an amazing on-screen chemistry, which is praiseworthy.

Naga Chaitanya looks extremely cute as a politician, while Mohanlal and Rana deliver good performances, with convincing mugs and body language.

    Storyline

Set in Pudukkottai (Tamil Nadu), an innocuous home for the aged where a sundry bunch of elderly folk – school teacher Shanmugam (Nassar), retired army general Murugan (Karthi), retired school principal Nellai (Ashish Vidyarthi) and the Chairman's wife (Meenakshi Sheshadri) – reside.

Soon enough the old couple, a widower who is no longer capable of any kind of physical activity, a pensioner who is a born leader (Kanchana), and the youngest member of the bunch are suddenly separated from their aged companions and sent to prison.

With no one to look after them, their lives are turned upside down and they're left to the mercies of an officer (Vivek) who believes himself to be the saviour of the old and weak. But, will their frail state be overcome soon enough?

    Plot

Navarasa (Vijay Sethupathi), who is a Professor of Agriculture in the college, feels constrained to accept a party job as a Special Invitee only because he wants to help a villager whose daughter died of leptospirosis and believes in 'Vaanavali'.

But, events take an unexpected turn when that villager, Jamini (Aishwarya Lekshmi), gets into the election line. She is initially dismissed as a pawn of her party but she becomes the center of attention after the elections as they think that she can swing the elections in their favour.

As soon as she steps on the campaign trail, things change dramatically for Jamini, turning her a victim of vengeance.

    Story

Roy Venkatesh (Sumanth) is a well-educated simpleton who works in a public service job and lives a life of peace and tranquility with his wife Anthika (Hansika Motwani) and kids. But, one day, he meets the daughter of one of the most notorious politicians of the state.

She soon captures his attention and Roy doesn't mind playing a fatherly role to her. But, soon, Anthika's father's henchmen eliminate her and expose her to the media. She's declared a fake orphan and Roy finds it hard to cope up with that.

But, with the help of his ever-so-loving mother and sister, he finally manages to prove Anthika's innocence and save her life. Cinematographer Mruthyunjay Rao has handled the camera work. The camerawork is slick and handles the action sequences with aplomb.

    Characters

Rajinikanth | Shankar | Anurag Kashyap | Vivek Prasanna | Vijay Sethupathi | Vimal | Santhanam | Sunil | Prabhu Deva Mammootty Technical Aspects Vivek Prasanna's witty screenplay is surely a big plus point of the film.

There are many incidents, sequences which can be easily confused, but the filmmaker ensures that there is no doubt whatsoever, as to where the film takes the narrative. Vivek Prasanna has an ace card up his sleeve, that is, his dialogues.

The director, well-versed with the languages spoken by the audiences, doesn't hesitate to replace certain words with new ones which in turn adds to the film's script. This is something, which scores big on his side.

    Cinematography

The sets look like that of an old fashioned village where the characters are interacting in their mother tongue. The scenes had a rustic feel to it, which suited the milieu of the movie. Though the plot of the movie was formulaic, it had the right dose of action and thrills.

Overall View The story of the movie was not entirely compelling and it was highly predictable. But, the movie was good for its core premise and it never went off the track. It may have lost the race to Naa Peru Surya, Naa Illu India, but there was no need to hold it responsible for that.

    Music

It is a treat to listen to the songs by A.R Rahman and Jaidev and gets repetitive at times. But, the hook lines like 'You can't beat love', 'Only you can be the wind beneath my wings' and 'Yaan (Veee) Naan', which became overnight hits, are set to perfection.

Cinematography Anirudh Ravichander's cinematography, like the previous movies, is breathtaking and deserves a special mention. The Last Word NGK is an entertainer with a message and is definitely worth a watch.

    Performance of the actors

With a huge star cast in front of him, Vijay Sethupathi is better off working on a script that is tailor made for him and that's exactly what he got in NGK. He carried the entire film on his shoulders and delivered a stellar performance.

Lead actress Ritu Varma too, has come up with an outing that's tailor made for her and she shines, without being showy. It's to be noted that she, too, carries the entire film on her shoulders and delivers a brilliant performance.

The rest of the cast, while working hard, delivers a good show but they do not hog the limelight. Technical Aspects Director CK Vijayendra Prasad has made a 'very' good film and he has tried to keep the proceedings fast-paced and noisy.

    The Direction

Gautham Vasudev Menon has kept up the tradition of making films which revolve around political ideologies. In this film, Karthi plays a strong-headed, young politician who is also an honest politician.

Unfortunately, the screenplay lacks the finesse which he is known for and as a result, the director ends up making the film just that – an aspirational film. In addition, he fails to leave an impact with the film. In case you have seen enough political dramas, you will not find this movie interesting.

Right from the time the first shot was done, it was clear that the film would have a good dose of action and that is exactly what we got. The way in which the camera moves and how Nayanthara turns into a lady-killer with her shoot-outs is something that will leave you impressed.

    Conclusion

NGK is a one of its kind attempt in Tamil Cinema and a huge positive for the industry and for Prabhu Deva and AR Murugadoss. The movie has it all and there isn't much to criticize about it. Go for it and make yourself proud.
